Goa – a world of its own

Many people mistakenly believe Goa to be an island, but the smallest state in India is in fact part of the mainland – although it is surrounded by rivers and mountains, which makes it feel separate from the rest of the country.

History, as well as geography, also sets Goa apart from mainland India. Central Goa in particular is heavily influenced by the state’s Portuguese past – Goa was liberated from Portugal in the early 1960. Since then, it has shed its flower child reputation and, today, this part of Goa is home to the best beach resorts in India, which are perfect for exploring!

Portuguese influences in Panjim

If you are keen to experience some of Goa’s rich Portuguese influence and heritage, look no further than Panjim – or Panaji, the name preferred by the locals – the state’s capital city. Built in Portuguese style, you will find several stunning examples of historic architecture here, including the massive bell at the Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception.
This bell was once part of St Augustine Tower, which was constructed in 1602 – the bell was moved to its current location in 1871. The church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception itself dates back to the 16th century – there are reports of its existence from as early as 1541.

The present-day structure was built from the original foundations in 1619 and is an excellent example of the dedication – and wealth – afforded to religious institutions of the time.

Cosmopolitan culture

East meets west in the Goan city of Panaji, and whether you are looking to shop, enjoy a fine meal or simply go exploring, you will find lots of things to like about this cosmopolitan capital.
This is Goa’s primary hub for commerce, education and culture, which means it truly has something to offer everyone. From its theatres to the charming cafes situated on its cobblestone alleys, Panaji is the perfect place to take in at your leisure.
The city’s historic older districts, Sao Tome and Fontainhas are also well worth a visit.

Beautiful beaches

Of course, the main draw of Goa for many tourists is its stunning beaches – and fortunately, the central part of the state has them in spades!

Vainguinim is arguably one of the finest beaches in the region. Home to the five-star Cidade de Goa Hotel and located only 10 km from Panaji, Vainguinim has everything you need for the perfect relaxing break – some rooms even offer sea views.
Whether you want to simply kick back on the sand and watch the sun slip below the horizon of the Arabian Sea or you are keen to get your adrenaline pumping with some water sports, you will find plenty to keep you busy in this beautiful destination.
