Consider sports travel for your next holiday

Consider sports travel for your next holiday

It’s not everyone’s dream holiday to sit back and do nothing for a week or two, and for some that precious time off work is the perfect opportunity to get active. If you’re looking to combine sports activities with a holiday then there are plenty of ways to do so, no matter whether you want to stay close to home or you’re in the mood for exotic adventure overseas.

Consider sports travel for your next holiday

Head for the coast – beach holidays don’t have to just be about lying on the sand or floating on an inflatable in the sea, as being by the coast presents plenty of opportunities for getting involved in lots of exciting sports. From windsurfing, diving and sailing through to something more adrenaline fuelled like jumping on a jet ski or parasailing; seaside holidays offer a huge variety of options for getting your heart rate up.

Choosing the coast also means you could spend your entire trip out on the water, as sailing holidays can be fun for every type of holidaymaker, from singles and couples through to large families. You don’t have to rough it in a hammock or risk scurvy from the food, as there’s plenty of very comfortable – even luxurious – options and you can get involved as much or as little as you want to with the sailing itself. Destinations like the Caribbean or the Mediterranean offer idyllic sailing conditions, and in particular Fuerteventura is a favourite for windsurfers. However, you can’t beat the good old British coast for some bracing breezes and fun swells.

Get outdoors adventuring

out into the great outdoors provides ample opportunity for combining exciting sports activities with a memorable holiday. In fact, if you want to make sports activities the focus of your holiday then opting for the countryside is an easy way do so. Hiking and walking are excellent exercise, and a fun way to explore all the wonderful landscapes of the world, whether you’re strolling through the Cotswolds or trekking through the Thai jungles. Cycling holidays, fishing trips, quad biking, zip lining, marathon running, hand gliding, potholing and cave diving are all entertaining ways to turn the great outdoors into your holiday playground.

Take a trip to the mountains

skiing and snowboarding are some of the most obvious sports activities to get stuck into whilst on holiday and there are locations all over the world where you can get involved, during both the summer and winter months. If you’re looking for some challenging cross country routes then destinations like Tyrol at the Seefeld Olympic region in Austria will keep you on your toes; for white knuckle black runs there’s legendary sheer drops such as Corbet’s Couloir in the USA or Delirium Dive in Canada; or for some world class skiing with even more renowned après ski, the Trois Vallées region in the Alps is pretty hard to beat.

Try something extreme

everyone’s got a bucket list and for many people extreme sports feature on it in some way shape or form. Whether you’re pining to spend a week running four marathons in the desert, trekking across the Arctic Circle, conquering the rainforest, jumping off cliffs, or kayaking up the Amazon river; carefully planning a trip around ticking one of these off your list is a great way to get active and make some amazing, once in a lifetime memories at the same time.

If you’re looking to combine sports activities with a holiday then these ideas offer some inspiration on how to do it. The best way to go about planning a trip such as this is to choose the activities you want to get involved in, pick the location best suited and then get booking!
