The Unexplained Mysteries of Colorado - Visit Colorado

The Unexplained Mysteries of Colorado

Colorado conjures images of the Southern Rocky Mountains, the sweeping Colorado River and some of the most amazing skiing in America. But if you head off the beaten track Colorado has proven itself to have some of the strangest tourist attractions in the USA – perfect if you have an interest in the creepy and bizarre!

The Unexplained Mysteries of Colorado - Visit Colorado

The Haunted Hotel

The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park has earned fame for being the setting for the Stephen King film “The Shining”. If you are brave enough you can go and stay in one of the hotel’s luxury rooms or enjoy dinner in one of the hotel’s restaurants. For the more adventurous though you can go on one of the arranged ghost tours visiting some of the haunted rooms, and even the walking through the underground tunnels that stretch out extensively beneath the hotel. Ghost hunts are available, searching for paranormal activity within the hotel – not for the faint of heart. Listen out carefully for the sound of “Red Rum” whispered through the walls while you’re there.”

The Cannibal of Colorado

From vampires to cannibals, the story of Alferd Packer a gold prospector who had come to Colorado to seek his fortune is a tragic one. In 1873 Packer and his colleagues became lost in the Rocky Mountains and ran out of food. Legend says that Packer killed and then consumed the flesh of his colleagues. He was then charged with manslaughter and sentenced to death. Although the death penalty was revoked, he spent over 40 years in custody. Once released he reportedly became a vegetarian. There are a number of museums in Colorado with displays on Packer, but if you’re passing through Boulder and fancy a nice salad or a burger check out the creepily dedicated Alferd Packer Restaurant and Grill. Just be sure to order your burger well done! If that’s not to your taste, here’s a guide to more tasty food around the world.

 Extra-terrestrial life

If you’re a fan of sit-coms you can head to Mork and Mindy’s house in Pine Street, Boulder. Sadly the residents won’t let you in, but they’re used to fans driving by for a quick “nannoo nannoo!” The place to go if you’re looking for genuine aliens however is The UFO Watchtower in Hooper. Located above the San Luis Valley, this watchtower is popular with flying sauce searchers from around the world. Admission is only $2, a bargain to search for extra-terrestrial life, visit the healing gardens and see this rather strange area of Colorado. In the twelve years since the center opened there have been hundreds of unexplained sightings from bright lights to silver aircraft. Maybe we’re not alone after all!

The Vampire Grave

Where do you bury a vampire? Turns out you bury him in Lafayette, Colorado. Fodor Glava, the vampire in question has a grave in the municipal cemetery but according to records was originally from Transylvania. According to the legend the rose bush that has grown in the middle of the grave originally sprouted from the stake that was driven through his heart. Visitors have reported seeing a thin figure in a black coat with long fingernails sitting on the grave. But was he really a vampire?

From the UK, flights to the Seychelles takes approximately 12 hours, and the country’s main airport is located on Mahe, which is home to the nation’s capital, as well as being the large...

Lanzarote’s top historical attractions

Lanzarote’s top historical attractions As the oldest of the Canary Islands, Lanzarote has a long, rich history that began 22 million years ago, when the isle was created by volcanic activity. That’s why I think discovering some of the local historical attractions is an absolute must on holidays here. What most charms me about Lanzarote’s historical sites is that they’re really varied. On the one hand, you’ve got castles and museums, while on the other you’ve got awe-inspiring, almost unearthly landscapes that tell the story of the island’s origin and formation. Cesar Manrique In my mind, one of the most important historical attractions in Lanzarote has to be the house of Cesar Manrique, which was built back in 1968. There are several reasons for this – firstly because Manrique is easily among the island’s most famous former residents, having been born here in 1919. In fact, by visiting his house today, you can view some of his works, as well as those by artists like Jo...
